A refrigerated ship was attacked by pirates in the waters off Lagos

A 1992 refrigerated vessel "Water Phoenix" was attacked 30 nautical miles south of Lagos on Tuesday. Allegedly, pirates boarded the ship, resulting in the kidnapping of two crew members.

The AIS of the "Water Phoenix" was not closed, and it remained in its original position as of 0630 UTC.

Dryad Global, a maritime safety consulting company, reported that the ship was boarded by an unknown number of people, resulting in the abduction of two Russian crew members including the captain.

The ship has 18 crew members, consisting of 7 Russians and 11 Filipinos, 16 of whom managed to evacuate to the safety cabin.

According to Dryad Global, this is the 13th reported incident in the Lagos Port Complex and Anchorage Waters in the past 12 months.

Dryad Global said, “At present, 95 people have been abducted in 18 incidents in the coastal areas of West Africa in 2020. This reflects a slight increase in the number of incidents and abductees compared to the same period in 2019.”

It is understood that the "Water Phoenix" refrigerated vessel (IMO 9045168) has a deadweight of 8005 tons and flies the Liberian flag.
