The following is a list of the busiest container ports in the United States, including important container hubs that make a significant contribution to the US economy, and they also allow transoceanic transportation of containers to support and promote global trade.


   1. The Port of Los Angeles, California-more than 9.2 million TEU in 2020


   The Port of Los Angeles (POLA) is also known as the Port of the United States. It has been the busiest port in the United States for 20 consecutive years, with a throughput of 9,213,395 TEU in 2020. California's main gateway has 25 freight terminals, handling 20% ​​of all incoming cargo to the United States.


   The port is located in San Pedro Bay, California, in the western United States, with an area of ​​more than 30 square kilometers and a waterfront length of approximately 70,000 meters.


  POLA is the 19th busiest container port in the world. Combined with the neighboring Port of Long Beach (POLB), it is the 10th busiest port in the world.


  2. Port of Long Beach, California-more than 8.1 million TEUs in 2020


   The Port of Long Beach (POLB) is the main gateway to the U.S. across the Pacific. It is the second largest container port in the United States and the 21st largest container port in the world. It will handle 8,113,315 teu in 2020, and the annual trade value is estimated at 170 billion U.S. dollars.


  POLB is located in Long Beach City, covering an area of ​​13 square kilometers with a coastline of 40 kilometers. It has 22 marine terminals, of which 6 are loading and unloading container ships, serving 175 routes around the world and connecting with 217 seaports around the world.


  3. New York and Port of New Jersey-more than 7.5 million TEU in 2020


   The ports of New York and New Jersey are the largest ports on the East Coast of the United States and the third largest and busiest ports in the United States. The throughput in 2020 is 7,558,819 teu and the operating capacity is approximately 9 million TEU.


   The port provides services to all major shipping companies and global alliances in the world. More than 70% of the first ports of call include approximately 386 kilometers of complex shipping channels, anchorages and port facilities.


  The port has 6 container terminals, which can load and unload 9 14000teu container ships at the same time.


  4. Port of Savannah, Georgia-More than 4.6 million TEUs in 2020


   The Port of Savannah (Georgia Ports) is the fourth busiest port in the United States and has the largest single-terminal container facility in North America, with a throughput of 4,682,249 TEU in 2020.


   It is expected that this number will increase by 2023, because the port’s annual container throughput will increase by 750,000 teu.


   In 2020, compared with the previous year, Savannah's total container trade has increased by 1.8%.


  5. Northwest Seaport Alliance (Seattle and Tacoma), Washington-more than 3.3 million TEU in 2020


   In 2020, the Northwest Seaport Alliance (NWSA) handled a total of 3,320,379TEU of goods, with a waterborne trade value of 66 billion U.S. dollars and 189 trading partners from all over the world.


  NWSA was formed in 2015 by the merger of the Port of Seattle and Tacoma, the largest in Washington State.


   NWSA reported that a total of 1,684 cargo ships docked at its terminal last year, of which 949 were container ships.


  6. ​​Port of Houston, Texas-more than 2.9 million TEU in 2020


   The Port of Houston is the sixth busiest port in the United States, with a total volume of 2,999,349 teu last year. It is the largest waterborne tonnage port in the United States and the largest container port in the U.S. Coastal Bay.


   The port provides employment opportunities for 3.2 million people, including two container terminals. It is the largest petrochemical production base in the United States. Petroleum and petroleum products are the main trading commodities.


  7. Port of Virginia, Virginia-more than 2.8 million TEU in 2020


   Last year, the Port of Virginia handled more than 2.8 million TEUs. It is the largest multimodal rail port on the East Coast of the United States and the seventh busiest port in the United States.


   Considering the expansion of the container terminals of Norfolk International Port and Virginia International Port in 2020, the total capacity of the Port of Virginia has increased by 40%, or 1 million TEU per year. The port plans to transfer more cargo in the future.


   8. The Port of Oakland, California-more than 2.4 million TEU in 2020


   The Port of Oakland is located on the east coast of San Francisco Bay. It is the eighth busiest port in the United States, with a throughput of 2,461,262 teu in 2020.


   The Port of Oakland is one of the four largest container ports on the Pacific coast, second only to the aforementioned Los Angeles, Long Beach, Seattle and Tacoma (NWSA).


   The port manages more than 5.26 square kilometers of maritime related facilities, and transports more than 99% of containerized cargo through Northern California, serving the local market of more than 14.5 million consumers.


  9. South Carolina Port, South Carolina-more than 2.3 million TEU in 2020


   Including the Port of Charleston and four other major shipping terminals, the Port of South Carolina (SC Ports) has a throughput of 239,995 teu in 2020, ranking ninth among the busiest ports in the United States.


  SC Port owns and operates Charleston Port, Georgetown Port, Greer Inland Port and Dillon Inland Port. The first phase of the Hugh K. Leatherman Wharf was opened in March this year. Leatherman Terminal is the first greenfield container terminal opened in the United States since 2009, adding more capacity and large ship capacity to the Port of Charleston.


   SC Ports claims that port operations have created one-tenth of the jobs in South Carolina, bringing an annual economic impact of US$63.4 billion to the state.


  10. Port of Miami, Florida-more than 1 million TEUs in 2020


   The Port of Miami contributes approximately US$43 billion and more than 334,000 jobs to Florida’s economy each year. It is the tenth busiest port in the United States, with 1066738 teu in 2020.


   The Port of Miami may be hailed as the cruise capital of the world, but its continued growth in freight reflects more than 1 million TEUs for five consecutive years.


   The port has invested more than US$1 billion in capital improvements in cargo, including a deep water channel with a water depth of about 20 meters and the purchase of new super post-Panama gantry cranes.
