DHL Express prepares for "historic" peak season

DHL Express predicts that in the coming shopping season, online shopping and freight volume will reach an "unprecedented" level, and is preparing for business for this.

The express company said that in 2020, its network's e-commerce business volume has increased by about 35%, adding that the upcoming peak season will further accelerate this growth, resulting in shipments that are 50% higher than last year's peak season.

To get ready, DHL Express has recruited more than 10,000 new employees worldwide. As a result of recent investments in hubs and portals, aircraft, vehicles and state-of-the-art technology, the company "multiplied its operational capabilities."

This year, the company has added four new wide-body B777F aircraft, and it is expected to add two more next month.

DHL said: "These 6 additional aircraft enable the company to perform more than 3,000 intercontinental flights each year."

The report pointed out that in addition to increased demand, many passenger planes are still parked at the airport due to the coronavirus outbreak.

In explaining in detail why the company is expected to have such a strong peak, the company stated that the use of e-commerce continues to grow, and Covid-19 has caused more people to shop online.

"The continuous improvement of globalization and digitalization has led to a significant increase in the number of merchants selling goods in global and online markets. For example, customers can choose goods from all over the world through shopping apps," the company said.

He said: Therefore, cross-border trade has continued to grow in the past few years. In addition, consumers are shifting their shopping activities to the online world as never before due to the major uncertainty brought about by the epidemic this year.

"This is especially suitable for upcoming large shopping days, such as'Black Friday' and'Cyber Monday', and the entire Christmas shopping season." Therefore, DHL Express expects global e-commerce trade to reach the highest level in history. "

DHL Express Global Sales Executive Vice President Michiel Greeven said: Covid-19 and its curfew or alienation have caused tremendous changes in the global retail industry.

As a result, the buying behavior of consumers and B2B buyers has undergone tremendous changes, and increasingly shifted to the online world. From an e-commerce perspective, some people might even say that Covid-19 will bring 2030 to 2020, and online shopping and necessary transportation are the new normal.

This is important not only for B2C retailers, but also for B2B e-commerce. Especially in these uncertain days, many large stores will carry out promotional activities online. This will also have an impact on the peak season. Shoppers will mainly buy the most cost-effective products online rather than going to physical stores. And the result of fast transportation demand.

The company also highlighted some investments in recent years: it tripled Cologne's production capacity through an investment of 123 million euros in 2019, and invested 20 million euros in Malmö this year to triple its production capacity. With an investment of 109 million euros, Malpensa's production capacity has increased by 12 times this year and the first quarter of next year. After investing 132 million euros, Istanbul's production capacity will increase by 25 times.
