Sweden designs a new windship: it can carry 6000 cars

A Swedish consortium including Wallenius Marine will showcase its revolutionary new wind car carrier design this Thursday.

"Oceanbird" is capable of carrying 6,000 vehicles and is jointly developed by the KTH Naval Architecture Center, maritime technology developer SSPA and Wallenius Marine. The Swedish Transport Authority agreed to provide funding for the project from 2019 to 2022.

"Thousands of years have passed since we learned to use the wind. The wind helped us discover our planet, and now it can help us protect it. "Oceanbird" is a revolutionary technology that will make ocean freight ships truly Sustainable. The wind is back," the Swedish consortium said in a press release. More details on the design of the new ship, the sail is 100 meters high, will be announced at the web conference on Thursday.

This kind of ship will not sail as fast as today's car transport ships. It takes 7 or 8 days to pass through the Atlantic Ocean, while the wind boat is expected to take 12 days.

German and French fleets are also developing their own sailing-type car carriers, although their carrying capacity is much lower than that of the Swedish carriers under design.
