US CBP seized 27 million US dollars in cash on a cargo ship

On Saturday, at the Port of San Juan, Puerto Rico, US Customs and Border Protection officials seized $27 million in cash in a container on a small cargo ship.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP K-9) found that the cargo on the Norma H II cargo ship was stinky from the container destined for St. Thomas during exit inspection. US Customs and Border Protection officials opened one of the boxes and found U.S. dollars in a vacuum-sealed package. Further inspection of the pallets revealed that a total of 34 containers contained the remaining undeclared currency.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) eventually confiscated the $27 million in cash seized without declaration and large amounts of cash smuggling laws.

The staff stated that “in recent years, a large number of currency smuggling has become the preferred method for drug smuggling organizations and other criminal groups to transfer illegal proceeds outside our country.”

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), DEA, HSI, and U.S. Attorney's Office for The District of Puerto Rico stated that the seizure was part of a broader investigation.

Norma H II is an anchor handling vessel built in 1974 and is now used as a general cargo ship.
