Port Klang's container handling capacity is close to pre-epidemic levels

The processing volume of Port Klang in Malaysia from January to November this year was 12.69 million TEU, which was close to the processing volume of 13.24 million TEU last year.

The Port Authority predicts that by the end of 2021, the throughput will reach 13.8 million TEU, which is in line with the growth trend before the epidemic, while the throughput of Port Klang in 2019 was 13.6 million TEU.

The severe impact of the epidemic has reduced the container throughput of the country’s largest port.

Malaysian Transport Minister Nadu Sriel stated that Port Klang will have to increase its handling capacity by 1.5 million TEUs every year to compete with neighboring ports such as Singapore. The Port of Singapore is expanding its handling capacity significantly every year. Dr. Wei Jiaxiang.

The Port Authority of Singapore (Port Authority of Singapore) completed the first phase of the new port Tuas Port this week and announced that two of the berths will start processing containers before the end of this year. After the port is completed, the capacity will be increased by 20 million TEU.

The Malaysian minister said that his country is trying to establish another seaport on Keri Island, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has conducted a feasibility study for it two years ago.

At the same time, French shipping company CMA CGM suspended all new bookings from Malaysia and Brunei ports to Chittagong this week.

As the ships deployed on this route need some repairs, the voyage has been suspended for several weeks. Container News asked CMA CGM to comment on the possible impact of the suspension of bookings on the Chittagong-Malaysia-Chittagong route, but did not receive a response at the time of writing.
