Malaysia’s transshipment ports have been hit hardest

According to the data of the analyst project44, the blank voyage of Malaysian ports in the transshipment hub is the most difficult.

Data from project44 shows that in major transshipment centers, a large number of port calls are skipped, resulting in hundreds of thousands of containers stranded at the terminal.

Project44 data insight vice president Josh Brazil said: "Blank navigation is a key factor in network disruption. The number of containers sitting in the "sweeper" transshipment port has distorted the balance of the global network.".

According to project44, the port of Tanjung Pelaypas (PTP) in Malaysia is the port with the most blank voyages this year, skipping 31 calls, although this number is slightly lower than the 35 in 2020. PTP is Maersk's main transshipment port in Southeast Asia.

In 2021, the number of empty ships in Port Klang, another transshipment center in Malaysia, will increase the most. Port Klang recorded 13.5 blank voyages in 2021, and in 2020, there were an average of 1.25 blank voyages for the same service. This means an increase of 980%.

Brazil commented: “Looking forward to the blank sailing schedule in the future, it seems that there is no sign of immediate improvement. The situation will not improve until China will be closed for about two weeks after the Chinese New Year in 2022.”
